Purposeful Series of Workshops

In recognizing the importance of supporting and developing teachers, USN has achieved excellent academic results by making Purposeful Planning and Teaching one of the “big rocks” of its teacher development program. In the Purposeful Planning workshop, participants learn a comprehensive curriculum design process utilizing the backwards planning model. In the Purposeful Teaching workshop, participants learn to design lessons with a laser-like focus on student achievement using the gradual release model of instruction. Through discussion, video thin-slicing, and intensive practice activities, teachers and instructional leaders develop a set of skills that allow them to enter the classroom prepared and confident to lead their students to academic success.
Selecting and training the right people for your school may be a school leader’s most important work. In fact, up to 25% of a teacher’s effectiveness in the classroom depends on “fit” with their school. All told, human capital accounts for nearly 60% of a school’s impact on student achievement (33% teacher impact and 25% principal impact). Yet, schools usually retain high performing and low performing teachers at strikingly similar rates, with about half leaving within the first five years. In the Purposeful People workshop, participants learn how to design a human capital system focused on attracting, training, and retaining mission-aligned staff.
School culture experts draw a direct line between a supportive environment and student learning, which is why our Purposeful Culture workshop is focused on teaching participants how to design a highly disciplined and supportive environment. With the knowledge and tools needed to design and execute a school culture system that allows students to learn and teachers to teach, leaders and teachers will feel empowered to and encouraged on their journey to high achievement.
Finally, the Purposeful Procedures workshops will help schools build the foundation for an efficient school via optimal classroom procedures. There are two to three months of learning time waiting to be recaptured within the existing school year. Much of this time is spent on inefficient school and classroom procedures such as settling in or packing up at the beginning and end of class. SPI’s fifth installment in the Purposeful Series of Workshops delivers participants the knowledge and tools needed to design and execute school and classroom procedures that maximize the learning time you have with your students.
